I’ve been using Sweet Almond Oil for about 1 year now on both myself and Luc for skin and hair care. I first heard about this oil from Francheska Medina aka “Hey Fran Hey”. I’ve had great success with this oil and figured I’d share some of the amazing benefits of sweet almond oil along with various uses you may want to consider trying.
Sweet Almond Oil for Skin:
Sweet almond oil is a popular essential oil commonly used in aromatherapy and is suitable for most skin types. It is also commonly used in many baby skin care range of products also. I actually started using this oil on Luc when he was 6 weeks old and developed baby Eczema. He has outgrown it for the most part. We also only use natural/vegan products on Luc who is now 14 months old. This has helped decrease occurrences of extremely dry skin.
I’ve been using Aura Cacia’s Sweet Almond Oil for the past year. I started using it as an ingredient in my homemade dark brown sugar scrub (see below) but now use it on both my skin and hair.
Below are some of the benefits of sweet almond oil for skin:
Benefit No. 1: Healthier Skin
Almond oil is naturally rich in vitamin A, B and E, which are great for skin health. In fact, most skin care products are loaded with these vitamins. Sweet almond oil helps in maintaining moisture levels of the skin and gets absorbed fairly quickly without blocking the pores. Tip: Apply immediately after showering for maximum absorption.
Overall, using sweet almond oil as part of your daily skin care regimen can help you to achieve the following:
*Improve your complexion while giving your skin a natural glow.
*Moisturize better and deeper
*Soothe skin irritation and skin inflammation
*Relieve dry and irritated skin
*Nourish skin, making it softer and smoother
*Cures chapped lips and body rashes. (Bet you didn’t know that one huh? Neither did I!..lol)
Benefit No. 2: Can Reduce Dark Circles
I’m always on the hunt for natural remedies for skin, hair and general health. So, If you’re looking for a natural solution to get rid of dark under eye circles, then look no further than sweet almond oil! Simply apply the oil before going to bed and allow it to work while you sleep. For best results, apply regularly for a couple of weeks at least. The treatment will help you get rid of dark circles as well as reduce dark eyelids and crow’s feet.
Benefit No. 3: Removes Impurities and Dead Skin Cells
Now, I first used sweet almond oil in conjunction with a homemade sugar scrub as a moisturizing exfoliant. The skin tends to look dull due to dead skin cells that use your face as their permanent home. These dead skin cells usually arise due to external factors like pollution, dirt, sweat, etc. In order to get rid of these dead skin cells and brighten the skin, a scrub can be made using a tbsp. of sweet almond oil and a tsp. of organic dark brown sugar. Massage this scrub on the face in small circular motions to get rid of dead skin cells and blackheads. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Benefit No. 4: Natural Remedy for Psoriasis and Eczema
Generally, almond oil helps to reduce inflammation, itching and redness of the skin. Make a mixture by adding 2 tbsp. of sweet almond oil, 5 drops of chamomile oil, 5 drops of lavender oil and 3 drops of vitamin E oil. Apply the mixture to the skin several times a day to ease the symptoms and get rid of cracked skin and other skin problems.
Benefit No. 5: Substitute for Body Lotion/Hand & Foot Cream
Sweet almond oil is a light and less greasy substitute for hand and foot creams. Due to its lightness, it is absorbed by the skin very quickly. Due to its rich zinc properties, it is known to heal the skin and get rid of dry and cracked skin on all parts of the body. Tip: remember to apply while skin is wet for maximum absorption.
Benefit No. 6: Ideal Makeup Remover
Sweet almond oil is a light and less greasy option that acts as an ideal makeup remover. Sweet almond oil effectively opens the pores and ensures all makeup is properly removed. Moreover, it averts the odds of acne and pimple occurrence and can be used for all skin types.
Benefit No. 7: Treats Chapped Lips
This one is my fave! Dry chapped lips during the colder seasons can be a huge drag. Make your own natural moisturizing lip balm by mixing sweet almond oil and some honey. Store the mixture in an empty container, in a cool dry place, and use it on the lips whenever they feel dry. No need to refrigerate!
Benefit No. 8: Moisturizing Skin Mask
Another simple sweet almond oil recipe for enhancing overall skin health, moisture and its glow is this moisturizing DIY mask:
1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 ripe avocado
Mash the ripe avocado and mix in all the ingredients to form a puree.
Apply the mix to the skin on all areas.
Leave it on for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with warm water and pat dry.
Sweet Almond Oil for Hair:
Sweet Almond oil adds luster and makes hair look and feel healthy. Due to many benefits of this oil, it is used in a wide variety of beauty treatments. This oil is a must have for your healthy hair care regimen whether you have straight, wavy, curly, kinky or coily hair. Below are some benefits of sweet almond oil for hair.
Benefit No. 9: Long and Healthy Hair
Sweet Almond Oil is a rich source of magnesium which is used in a variety of hair products. Deficiency of magnesium can result in heavy hair breakage. Apply sweet almond oil once or twice a week to moisturize the scalp. This can help to reduce hair loss and improve overall hair health quality. After massaging, you can sit under a hooded dryer or steamer for 15-20 minutes. This will ensure better absorption of the oil. I also love to seal my natural hair with sweet almond oil. I use it mainly during the summer to keep my curls, kinks and coils moisturized and supple.
Benefit No. 10: Minimizes Split Ends (to a point)
A mixture of sweet almond, castor and olive oil in equal proportions massaged into the hair will help to minimize split ends. Apply this once or twice a week to notice a change in just a few weeks. Be careful not to rely heavily on this as your split end remedy. You’ll eventually need to cut those strands to prevent further splitting/breakage.
Benefit No. 11: Substitute for Shine Enhancers
Sweet almond oil is light in texture and makes a great substitute for shine enhancers for hair. For those with dry hair, sweet almond oil has high moisturizing properties due to the essential fatty acids it contains.
Benefit No. 12: Leaves Hair Shiny and Soft
Make a mixture of mashed avocado and oil mask and apply it to the hair as a hair mask. Leave it on for 30 minutes before washing and conditioning. The mask ensures shinier and softer hair over time.
So as you can see, sweet almond oil has many uses. No wonder it’s such a popular essential oil! It’s also suitable for most skin types including babies! I’ve used it on my son since birth. It’s much more gentle on the skin than some of the highly fragrant baby care lines on the market. Softer, healthier hair and skin with a little extra glow, what have you got to lose? 😉
Lets stay connected!
