Dealing with acne at any age can be extremely frustrating. It took me years (18 to be exact) to get my acne under control. Now I’m in an off and on battle with dark spots on my face also known as hyperpigmentation. I never realized the lasting effects that carelessly picking at my face would have on my skin and confidence. Dark spots would linger longer than my pimples! Here are 5 natural & affordable ways to safely remove dark spots for good!
1) Dark Brown Sugar:
The 1st and most essential thing you must do after dark spots have found their way to your face is exfoliate. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells revealing a fresh new base for skin. It also speeds up the healing process for dark spots which is a huge plus.
DIY Brown Sugar Scrub: 1 tbsp sweet almond oil and 1 tsp of organic dark brown sugar.
2) Raw Organic Honey:
Clear skin in a honey jar? Raw honey is one item everyone should add to their skin care regimen. It’s a natural healer and moisturizer. Raw organic honey has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties which makes it great for healing cuts and burns by killing bacteria and fungus. The magic behind raw honey is that it contains gluconic acid. This core ingredient is what enables raw honey to brighten the complexion, even out skin tone and lighten dark spots.
Tip: Be sure to use raw organic honey that has the USDA organic seal on the container. Raw organic honey is more nutritious to the skin than processed honey because it still contains all of its healing properties that have not been pasteurized and eliminated with high heat temperatures.
3) Pure Aloe Vera –
At less than $2 a leaf, pure aloe vera packs so many benefits! Aloe Vera is 99% water based. Pure aloe vera gel has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that kill bacteria and reduce inflammation from clogged pores. One of aloe vera’s main ingredients is salicylic acid. This is the main ingredient in most topical acne cleansers. Since pure aloe vera is naturally a great combatant against acne this will greatly reduce the chance of developing dark spots in the first place. Most over the counter aloe vera gels contain additives and preservatives to increase their shelf life. Fresh is always best! You can buy an aloe leaf from any health food store or local grocery store in the vegetable section. You can also grow an aloe plant in your yard depending on where you live. Details on how to use and store your aloe leaf can be read here:http://healthyhairtotoe.com/2015/08/08/multiple-benefits-of-aloe-vera/
4) Lemon – Fresh lemon juice naturally contains a high vitamin C content. This gives lemons the ability to brighten the skin over time. Fresh lemon juice also contains citric acid. This ingredient helps to exfoliate and speed up the treatment of acne while lightening dark spots and blemishes. Here are two ways to use lemon on your skin:
- Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto a cotton ball and rub it on the skin. Sensitive skin readers, be sure to dilute your lemon juice with water before using. Leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer or serum. Follow this remedy twice daily for a few months or until you notice improvement.
- Mix equal parts of fresh lemon juice and raw honey very well and apply to the affected area. Cover your skin with a warm towel for 15 minutes and then rinse with cool water. You can also opt to sit in a steamy bathroom with this mask as well.
5) Apple Cider Vinegar –
ACV with the “mother” has an endless amount of skin, hair and health benefits. The “mother” is that filmy and cloudy stuff at the bottom of the bottle. The main ingredient that makes ACV an ideal choice for healing hyperpigmentation is sulfur. At the right amounts, sulfur has the ability both dry up acne and even out skin tone. Since sulfur is used in so many topical skin treatments, it makes ACV an easy choice for healing both acne and dark spots. Just dab some ACV on a cotton ball and apply to the affected area twice daily. The smell does go away after a couple of minutes. If you have sensitive skin try diluting with equal parts water to minimize the stinging sensation. You can also drink ACV as a tonic to enhance its effectiveness on your skin and overall health. Drinking ACV is one of my daily skin care & healthcare routines. Clear skin helps us to feel confident and beautiful. I would have to put on makeup from the moment I woke up just to cover up my dark spots. I wasn’t even confident enough to be bare face in front of my husband. Now I can confidently go days, even weeks without wearing any type of makeup. Just remember, the best thing you can do for your skin to prevent breakouts and dark spots is DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE.
Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation? How do you maintain clear skin? What regimens or products have worked for you in the past or currently to fade your dark spots?
