I recently paid a visit to Devachan Salon in NYC (Broome Street) with my 12 year old niece. She was in desperate need of a trim before she heads back to Texas. What I didn’t count on was getting devacut as well!..lol.
My niece hasn’t trimmed her hair in a little over 2 years. There aren’t many salons that specialize in cutting curly hair back where she lives. Thankfully she doesn’t really need frequent trims but we were at a point of desperation. She kept complaining that her curls were loosening and that her ends wouldn’t curl anymore (sign of split ends and damaged hair). So before she got to New York, I made it a point to book her an appointment at Devachan.
My niece’s hair had gotten so long but had no shape or volume to it. She kept telling me she just wanted more volume and a healthy length. I knew maintenance wouldn’t be a problem because she’s been styling her own hair for the last 3 years.
The 1st thing we noticed was how friendly the staff at the Broome Street Devachan Salon were. We were greeted instantly with warmth and were treated like family from the moment we entered the salon. This was a much different and much more positive atmosphere than I experienced at Devachan’s Spring Street location years ago.
My niece’s stylist was Devachan Senior Stylist Nevila (@Nevila_devacurl). She instantly put my niece’s nerves at ease by putting her in complete control. Nevila asked her, “what do you want to do to your hair” & “what look do you want to achieve”. To get a better idea of my niece’s hair care regimen, Nevila asked my niece to walk her through her routine for cleansing, conditioning and styling. We were shocked that my niece knew so much about curly hair care at such a young age.

The following products were used on my niece’s hair:
Decadence No-Poo Cleanser. Decadence One-Condition. Heaven In Hair Deep Conditioner. Ultra Defining Gel & Super Cream.
After seeing how much healthier my niece’s hair was after her trim I decided to get my hair done as well. I originally wanted to go to Ouidad but their schedule of available appointments didnt work with my schedule. Now, I didn’t want anything too drastic done. I just knew my hair had gotten way too long at the crown and I needed more shape and volume. I decided to go along with Devachan Junior Stylist Latoya (latoya_devacurl). This was a much more affordable option as well. Latoya was extremely attentive to my hair and its needs.

The following products were used on my hair:
Decadence No-Poo Cleanser. Decadence One-Condition. Heaven In Hair Deep Conditioner. Super Cream and Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam.
I’ve never used Devacurl’s Frizz Free Volumizing Foam before. I loved the extra body and shine this styler gave me without the frizz. My hair didn’t feel weighed down either which was a huge plus!
I absolutely love my new cut! It definitely shows off my facial features much more than before. My hair also doesn’t feel as heavy which is something I love during the summer months. As far as washing it is much easier to maintain and style.
Overall, my second experience at Devachan salon was much better. The staff had great hospitality & customer service. They were very clear about their prices and affordable options for various budgets. Keep in mind, each stylist has a different starting price point. Senior stylists have a starting price is $125. Junior stylists tend to have a lower starting price point of $100. Most importantly, my niece’s 1st Devachan/curly hair salon experience had such a positive impact on her self-esteem. She is embracing her curls more than ever and couldn’t be happier!
