Happy New Year! Now that the buzz of the holiday season is over, can I ask you a question? Have you taken care of yourself lately? New Year’s resolutions are typically a great tool for motivating us to achieve our goals. However, if you’re exhausted from everyday life or find yourself in a mental fog, you’ll find it very hard to achieve those goals. Here are 9 easy ways to practice self care for the mind, body and soul.
Unplug for an hour or longer. It’s 2017 and there are literally a thousand ways for you to stay connected to the outside world. As much as you may catch a case of FOMO if you don’t refresh your Instagram feed, your brain needs the break. Set aside an hour or two a day where you are nowhere near the constant alerts of texts, social media and email.
Edit your social media feeds. A huge part of self care is removing toxicity and negative energy from your everyday life. Since majority of our time is connected to technology, try deleting or muting anything negative on your feed.
Mini meditation. Take at least 5 minutes out of your day to meditate. It can be done while you’re unplugging, when you wake up or right before bed. You can even do it in your car on your lunch break. Meditation helps to bring an awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and the body as a whole. Once practiced daily you’ll notice an increase in creativity, productivity, happiness, clarity, emotional stability while decreasing anxiety.
Make one healthy food choice a day. Eating a healthy diet is a huge commitment and will not happen overnight. I always recommend starting small with one healthy choice a day. Try drinking an extra glass of water daily or ditching that 3pm chocolate bar for a plant-based protein bar and some fruit. You’ll feel great about your small win and likely make this a daily ritual. Check out my easy plant-based recipes here!
Laughter is the best medicine. Watch an extremely funny show or read a funny comic strip that you enjoy. Modern Family, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Martin & Christley Knows Best are some of my faves that’ll leave me in stitches..lol.
Take a quick nap. A 10-20 minute nap can help jump start your brain and body for the second half of your day. Just be sure to set your alarm to wake you back up if you’re on your lunch break at work!
Check in with your emotions. Take 5-10 minutes throughout your day to sit quietly and label how you are feeling at that moment. If it’s a negative emotion: What is the source? Can you remove yourself from the situation? If not, you can make it a point to write out your thoughts and either burn, bin or shred the paper.
Home spa. If you don’t have the funds to splurge on expensiveness spa treatments you can always do a home spa treatment. I usually grab my favorite clay mask with facial and body scrub, essential oils and magazines for my at home spa day. Sometimes my spa treatment is a simple facial scrub and washing my hair. You can tailor your treatment to your preference. Since I have kids I usually do this while they’re sleeping or early morning before they’re awake.
Help someone out. You can do simple things like holding the door for someone, carrying a grocery bag for a neighbor or paging it forward on your next coffee run. They’ll be happy you did so and you’ll feel great for doing good by others.
Remember, self care is something you do once and put to the wayside. It’s also not something you do when you’re utterly exhausted. Self care should be practiced regularly to avoid mental, physical and emotional exhaustion. It’s not an incentive, it’s a necessity for overall great health and wellness. Which of these self care practices have you tried or will you try?
