Non-Toxic Plant-Based Makeup for Women of Color

IMG_0620

This is NOT a sponsored post.

Hey loves! I’ve been slowly swapping out my makeup for toxin free plant-based makeup. I can’t lie, it hasn’t been an easy process. I’ve been wanting to make the change beucause I value my health more than anything. Many of these chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption, cancer and even harmful to reproductive health and baby’s development. Unfortunately, most companies either aren’t inclusive of shades for women of color or completely miss the mark with shades available. I’ve finally found a brand that not only can account for my unique hues, undertones and complexion as a whole, but is inclusive of ALL shades and tones!

Back Story..There’s Levels To This

I originally decided to stick with NARS for my face and cheeks until I could find a brand that was right for my skin tone with clean ingredients that I could trust. I had pretty much given up on trying anything new because of my terrible experiences with other brands and color matching. I’ve literally dropped $100+ on other brands that would claim to match my skin tone, only to find out their shades did the exact opposite. I’ve even gone back and purchased additional products in hopes that mixing shades would give me the perfect color and coverage with no success. Sound like you?

The Brand & How I Found Them

Au Naturale is a plant-based non-toxic cosmetic line that I found through my Back To Basics Box last month. IMG_0651(1) I reviewed their lip stain and fell in love! I didn’t realize that in my box came a swatch card for their face makeup. The shades available were abundant!
IMG_0620

I contacted Back To Basics Box on their official IG page. I told them what brand/shade of products I used & and they were able to color match me in less than 5 minutes! I was excited but nervous at the same time. I kept asking myself, did I just shell out $83 to be disappointed again? Well, judgement day came. I got my package and cracked that baby open right away!

What I Bought & How It Held Up

Au Naturale Completely Covered Creme Concealer

This concealer comes in stick form. I’ve only used liquid concealers so I was a bit worried. I wasn’t sure if it would have the same coverage effect as well as match my complexion. Au Naturale’s concealer was an exact match to my previous NARS creamy concealer.IMG_0658 I found that I didn’t need as much concealer as I did in the past. It did go on a smidgen lighter than my previous concealer from NARS at 1st which did scared me..lol. Then I remembered, I am probably darker than usual during the summer months…lol. Once I applied the foundation it all blended well together and very smooth!

Au Naturale’s Completely Covered Concealer is formulated without animal bi-products, synthetic preservatives, nano particles, gluten, parabens, fillers, dyes or toxins, 100% natural, cruelty-free and vegan.

Ingredients: Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam Seed Oil), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ricinus Communis (Castor Seed Oil), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla Wax), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Seed Oil), Organic Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender Oil), Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca Root Starch), Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Micas, Zinc Oxide, Silica, Copernica Cerifera (Carnuba Wax). May Contain: Ultramarine Blue, Chromium Oxide Green.

Au Naturale Semi-Matte Powder Foundation

This semi-matte powder foundation was mind-blowing. It’s a powder in a pump bottle that covers like a liquid foundation. I’m no makeup guru but I’ve never seen a product like this before. The coverage was FLAWLESS!!!! It was as if an airbrushed had been applied to my face to remove any imperfections. The plus side was that I still looked like myself…just a glowing version!

Au Naturale’s powder foundation is formulated without gluten, parabens, fillers, animal by-products, synthetic preservatives or toxins. It’s also 100% natural, cruelty-free and vegan.

Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Iron Oxides, Micas, Silica, Copernica Cerifera (Carnuba) Wax May Contain: Ultramarine Blue, Chromium Oxide Green

IMG_0644 IMG_0646(1)

Au Naturale Pure Powder Bronzer

The bronzer comes is packaged the same way as the powder. I just applied to my cheekbones and was good to go! It gave me an airbrushed sunkissed glow which I love! I have NEVER gotten this effect from any bronzer I’ve ever worn. Hands down, one of my favorite plant-based makeup products!

Au Naturale’s Pure Powder Bronzer is formulated without animal bi-products, synthetic preservatives, nano particles, gluten, parabens, fillers, dyes or toxins, 100% natural, cruelty-free and vegan.

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Micas.

IMG_0666IMG_0642

Price Point

Normally I would spend  close to $130 on conealer, foundation and bronzer. I figured that wasn’t bad since I don’t wear makeup everyday and my look is very minimal. Au Naturale through Back To Basics cost me $83 even.

Final Thoughts

Normally I would have this heavy (slightly itchy) feeling on my face after wearing makeup for a few hours. Au Naturale left my skin feeling so fresh and natural that I kept forgetting I was wearing makeup! Removal was also easy and quick. No breakouts occurred after use as well. Winning all over the damn place!

I will be sticking with this brand but I’m open to trying other non-toxic plant-based makeup brands as long as they’re inclusive of all shades!

Thank you all so much for the love on my IG post and IG stories regarding this Au Naturale Cosmetics! I’m beyond excited to finally use plant-based makeup! What I love even more though is sharing my love for  clean beauty and holistic beauty tips with you all! As a black woman in the green beauty space, it’s important for me to find & highlight brands that are ethical & inclusive of all. I really hope this helps all of you!

You can follow Back To Basics Box on Instagram and check out this plant-based makeup line as well as other non-toxic products at www.backtobasicsbox.com. If you’re looking for more holistic & non-toxic skincare tips head on over to my YouTube channel .

7 Easy Ways To Prep Your Skin For Summer

IMG_2283
This post is sponsored by Vanity Planet but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

Hey guys! Is it just me or have you also noticed Mother Nature has been teasing us with summer like temperatures this past week? It has me itching for 75+ degree temps, sandals and morning runs without 3 layers of clothing! When seasons change our skin can take a brutal hit. I’ve partnered with Vanity Planet to share 7 easy ways to prep your skin for a healthy problem free glow all summer long! Vanity planet, skincare, holistic skincare, african american skincare, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, beauty, how to remove dark spots, aloe vera skincare, eczema, psoriasis, beauty, natural hair, healthy hair to toe, vegan skin care, vegan skincare, black soap eczema, black soap psoriasis, black soap dark spots, black soap acne, vanity planet spin brush, clarisonic mia 1, clarisonic mia 2, vanity planet vs clarisonic

Invest in a Mask

There’s nothing like a great mask treatment that really gets deep into your pores to give you a fresh start. Your pores are the gateway to healthy skin so you want to make sure you’re ridding them of bacteria and product build-up regularly. More on what products I use religiously to heal and maintain clear skin here and here!

  Exfoliate

Exfoliating helps to renew the skin by removing dead skin cells and speeding up the cell turnover rate. This essentially helps to heal the skin from dark spots quicker than time alone. Lately I’ve been exfoliating with my Vanity Planet Spin for Perfect Skin Cleansing Brush (say that fast 5 times!..lol).Vanity planet, skincare, holistic skincare, african american skincare, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, beauty, how to remove dark spots, aloe vera skincare, eczema, psoriasis, beauty, natural hair, healthy hair to toe, vegan skin care, vegan skincare, black soap eczema, black soap psoriasis, black soap dark spots, black soap acne, vanity planet spin brush, clarisonic mia 1, clarisonic mia 2, vanity planet vs clarisonic Just like an effective scrub, Spin for Perfect Skin uses a universal, single-speed rotation system to effectively remove dead skin cells on face and body, a win win! Suitable for all skin types, this is a must have item for any budget! It also comes with a pumice stone to execute the perfect home pedicure! I apply my scrub to my feet and use the stone to whisk away any dry dull skin. It beats having to go to the nail salon (which I hate..lol).

Cleanse

I’ve become a HUGE fan of Raw African Black Soap as a cleanser for my hair (watch here), face and body. It’s a great remedy for acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes, the list goes on.Vanity planet, skincare, holistic skincare, african american skincare, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, beauty, how to remove dark spots, aloe vera skincare, eczema, psoriasis, beauty, natural hair, healthy hair to toe, vegan skin care, vegan skincare, black soap eczema, black soap psoriasis, black soap dark spots, black soap acne, vanity planet spin brush, clarisonic mia 1, clarisonic mia 2, vanity planet vs clarisonic

Vanity Planet’s Spin for Perfect Skin Body Brush is EVERYTHING!

I’ve been using it with my Vanity Planet Spin for Perfect Skin Face & Body Cleansing Brush to lift dirt and oil trapped in my pores daily, head to toe!

There is nothing worse than a breakout during summer. Hot and humid temps plus sweaty oily skin are the PERFECT breeding ground for acne. These two items are a lethal pair against problem causing bacteria!

Just be sure to use raw and unrefined black soap to reap all of the natural benefits. You can purchase this spin brush from Vanity Planet for just $35 with code: SpinSpring70. That’s 70% off the retail price of $100! I thought this was a steal since most comparable brushes cost $100 or more. Vanity Planet has two other crazy good deals right now:

Tone & Moisturize

I know you’re wondering, “why did she put 4 & 5 together? That’s because during the summer months I moisturize and tone with one item.Vanity planet, skincare, holistic skincare, african american skincare, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, beauty, how to remove dark spots, aloe vera skincare, eczema, psoriasis, beauty, natural hair, healthy hair to toe, vegan skin care, vegan skincare, black soap eczema, black soap psoriasis, black soap dark spots, black soap acne, vanity planet spin brush, clarisonic mia 1, clarisonic mia 2, vanity planet vs clarisonic I swear and live by pure aloe straight from the leaf! Raw aloe juice is multipurpose and has so many healing properties! Read more about how I use pure aloe here. If you’re looking for something a tad bit more dense than aloe but also lightweight then I recommend sweet almond oil. You can read more about the benefits of using sweet almond oil here.

Protect

Make sure you are using an effective sunscreen daily! I cannot stress enough as to how important this is in order to maintain healthy skin but also protect it from harmful UV rays. The amount of SPF varies by individual skin tone, age, etc. Just make sure you are protecting your skin properly.

Hydrate

Lastly but also the most important (and affordable) thing you can do for your skin is to drink plenty of water! Adequate hydration keeps our skin moisturized and increases elasticity (say “bye Felicia!” to premature wrinkles). Fruit-Infused-Waters-from-Green-BlenderWater also helps to flush out toxins from the body, giving us healthy glowing skin. If you have eczema or psoriasis staying hydrated is key to preventing painful flare ups. You’ll also keep bloat at a minimum! Bottoms up!

How do you prep your skin for summer? Have you tried Vanity Planet’s Spin For Perfect Skin brush? Comment below and let me know. 🙂

Raw African Black Soap for Natural Hair (Tutorial)

black soap for natural hair, african black soap natural hair, black soap natural hair, black soap curly hair, black soap alopecia, holistic remedy alopecia, black soap eczema, african black soap Psoriasis, black soap dry scalp, african black soap dry scalp, hoslitic remedies scalp conditions, black soap curly hair, african black soap curly hair, curly nikki, naturally curly, healthy hair to toe

Hey loves! Postpartum shedding and a severely itchy scalp had reared its ugly head a few months ago. I had been using Raw African Black Soap on my youngest son hair to toe for his severe eczema and had great results. I decided to give it a try on my hair! Raw African Black Soap is a great natural remedy for dandruff, itchy scalp, rashes, psoriasis and of course eczema! It’s also hypoallergenic, vegan and has NO EXPIRATION DATE! Before I get into my results, here are some major benefits of using Raw African Black Soap on natural hair.black soap for natural hair, african black soap natural hair, black soap natural hair, black soap curly hair, black soap alopecia, holistic remedy alopecia, black soap eczema, african black soap Psoriasis, black soap dry scalp, african black soap dry scalp, hoslitic remedies scalp conditions, black soap curly hair, african black soap curly hair, curly nikki, naturally curly, healthy hair to toe

Raw African Black Soap or “black soap” has so many natural cleansing properties for the hair and skin! Some of them include:

  • antibacterial
  • anti-oxidant
  • anti-fungal
  • antiseptic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antiviral

Always purchase unrefined and raw African Black Soap. I purchased mine from Raw Apothecary.

This is CRUCIAL for healthy hair and skin! These cleansing properties rid the scalp of problem causing bacteria and product build up that can clog pores and follicles. When hair follicles and pores are clogged they can become a breeding ground for pesky scalp conditions and hinder hair growth. Black soap also has the unique ability to removes excess oils from the scalp and hair, without removing essential natural oils in our scalp and on our hair. This helps our strands to retain moisture and reduce excessive dryness and damage. Black soap is also a natural source of vitamins A and E which are essential for maintaining strong healthy hair and skin (increases elasticity).

Did you know that black soap is also a gentle exfoliant? Exfoliants give us a deep invigorating clean feeling from free radicals while revealing rejuvenated hair and skin.  Black soap also contains iron oxides and it has numerous natural healing properties.

Raw African Black soap’s ingredients are highly beneficial for both hair and skin! They include:

  • All-Natural Shea Butter – Highly moisturizing, rich in Vitamins A & E, it has been proven to repair skin damage.
  • Palm Oil – High in antioxidants and great for improving acne, eczema and burns.
  • Coconut Oil – Locks in moisture, helping to reduce wrinkles.
  • Cocoa Pod – Great anti-inflammatory properties that go to battle for your skin against free radicals.
  • Plantain Skin Ash – Great moisturizing & exfoliating properties.

My Experience Using African Black Soap On My Natural Hair

I noticed my hair has been THRIVING since cleansing my hair with black soap! I’ve coupled this cleansing method with another daily scalp regimen (details on that coming soon) and my hair has never been healthier!black soap for natural hair, african black soap natural hair, black soap natural hair, black soap curly hair, black soap alopecia, holistic remedy alopecia, black soap eczema, african black soap Psoriasis, black soap dry scalp, african black soap dry scalp, hoslitic remedies scalp conditions, black soap curly hair, african black soap curly hair, curly nikki, naturally curly, healthy hair to toe My curls and coils are shinier, bouncier and easier to manage. I’ve also found that I’m experiencing much less shedding. In fact, my hair is the longest it’s ever been since returning to natural hair almost 8 years ago! My itchy scalp is pretty much non-existent as well.

When it comes to using black soap on natural hair the benefits are endless. It’s great for all ages, hair types and skin types! The best part is that no mixing or prepping is required to use it!

Here’s a quick video on how I’ve incorporated Raw African Black Soap into my healthy hair regimen:

Vegan Beauty Must Haves With 100% Pure Cosmetics

IMG_8904

Hey loves! It’s no secret that I follow an extremely non-toxic & holistic lifestyle from hair to toe. When it comes to skincare & makeup, I only use non-toxic and/or plant-based products.

One of my favorite plant-based beauty brands is 100% Pure Cosmetics and Skincare. Their products are vegan, certified organic and use only good for you ingredients. I ordered their Coconut Oil Body Scrub during a holiday sale a few years ago and was blown away! I recently decided I’d give their facial skincare & makeup products a try to see how they hold up.

1st up is 100% Pure’s Coffee Bean Eye Cream. vegan makeup, clean beauty, non toxic makeup, plant based makeup, vegan cosmetics, 100% Pure Cosmetics, vegan skincare, skincare, beauty, vegan skin, beauty blogger, refinery 29, buzzfeed beauty, vegan makeup african american skin, black skincare, vegan mascara, vegan lipstick, cruelty free makeup, vegan matte lipstick, vegan semi matte lipstick, no dirty beauty, natural hair, curly hair, coily hairI don’t suffer from dark circles but I do have extremely puffy eyes with smile lines. After reading the reviews I knew I had to try it. All I can say is O..M..G! While it didn’t eliminate my puffiness off the bat, I did see a reduction almost instantly! I’m going to continue using over the next 30 days and I will give you another update then.

Next up is 100% Pure’s Cocoa Butter Semi-Matte Lipstick in Sandstone.vegan makeup, clean beauty, non toxic makeup, plant based makeup, vegan cosmetics, 100% Pure Cosmetics, vegan skincare, skincare, beauty, vegan skin, beauty blogger, refinery 29, buzzfeed beauty, vegan makeup african american skin, black skincare, vegan mascara, vegan lipstick, cruelty free makeup, vegan matte lipstick, vegan semi matte lipstick, no dirty beauty, natural hair, curly hair, coily hair I love matte lipsticks but they can be so over drying within minutes of applying. How to Keep Your Winter Skin Healthy

afro-american-woman-washing-face

Temperatures are plummeting here in NY which is a sure-fire sign that old man winter is near. Dry itchy skin, redness, tightness, irritation, and even breakouts are common when winter weather sets in. Trying to get problem skin under control during winter can feel like the ultimate struggle. Here are the causes of dry winter skin and prevention tips to keep your skin healthy and hydrated until spring.

What Causes Dry Winter Skin?

  • The first thing you need to keep in mind during winter is that the air is much drier. Think about it for a second. During 80 degree weather, water is able to vaporize into the air at an excessive rate causing humidity (moist air). However, during winter, water tends to remain in its liquid form, unable to vaporize, resulting in drier air.
  • Second, the heat we use to warm our homes, cars, offices, etc., can wreak havoc on our skin. This dry air continues to pull out natural moisture from our skin resulting in tight, dry itchy skin.
  • Hot beverages like tea and coffee may taste great but they are usually loaded with caffeine. Caffeine acts as a natural diuretic, drying out your skin from the inside.

How To Prevent It

  • One of the easiest and most effective things you can do to prevent problem skin in general is to wash your face every night. It’s absolutely essential to wash away your makeup, sweat and pollutants of the day before you go to bed.
afro-american-woman-washing-face, healthy skin, winter skin, beauty, winter skincare

When it comes to your morning routine, you can just do a quick rinse with water. There’s no need to go crazy with a deep cleansing routine unless you sweat excessively overnight.

  • Dress to protect your skin from winter weather (frigid temps & high winds) as much as possible.
healthy skin, winter skin, beauty, winter skincare

Keep your hands and face covered when it’s extremely cold.

  • Try using a humidifier in your bedroom to keep the air moist.
    mokoqi-aromatherapy-oil-diffuser-filter-cool-mist-air-ultrasonic-humidifier-free-with-color-changing-led-light-waterless-auto-off-for-home-office-house-yoga-spa-bedroom-babyroom

Remember, moist air further hydrates the skin. This is especially helpful for those with eczema & psoriasis.

  • Take lukewarm showers/baths. Long hot showers/baths pull out natural oils that keep our skin hydrated.
    kulit-kering1

You can indulge once weekly but be sure to moisturize a little extra afterwards. Tip: Moisturize while skin is soaking wet. I usually apply sweet almond oil immediately after showering. It’s super lightweight and has amazing benefits! Read more about the benefits of sweet almond oil here.

  • If you can’t ditch caffeinated hot drinks try limiting them to 1-2 per day. You can also try substituting both for herbal teas if you’re looking for something to warm you up on a frigid day.

    wellness-teas1
  • Keep stress levels at a minimum. The moment we are stressed out it tends to show up on our skin in the form of breakouts, rashes, etc. Try taking time to address what’s stressing you out. Once you do figure it out try practicing meditation or yoga for at least 15-30 minutes a day. It’s a great way to decompress and release tension.
  • Try eliminating synthetic fragrances in laundry, dish, and personal care products. Think of it this way, if it’s not an essential oil (lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, etc) than it’s a synthetic fragrance. These fragrances tend to cause skin irritation for many people. They’re also loaded with petrochemicals and phthalates, many of which have been found to have hormone disrupting or cancer-causing effects.

*I switched to Seventh Generation fragrance free detergent and dish soap last summer. I noticed other dish soaps dried out our hands & left an aftertaste in our cups/Tupperware after washing which was super gross. We switched to their detergent after our newborn developed severe baby eczema. It is a bit pricier our hands are softer, we don’t taste soap in our food and drink & the baby’s eczema cleared up significantly!*(not sponsored)

Now that you know the causes of problem winter skin and how to prevent it, what will you do to keep your skin happy & healthy this winter?
