I Don’t Love My Kids Equally: The Reality of Motherhood After Baby Number 2

When I found out I was pregnant with baby number 2, I was ecstatic! They would be close in age, be each other’s confidant and hopefully best friends for life. Naturally, we worried whether our older son would be receptive to his new baby brother. That feeling didn’t last long as it became clear to us that he would be fine due to his protective and nurturing personality. motherhood, bossmom, bossmomnation, munamommy, parenting magazine, healthyhairtotoe, targetbaby, cat and jack, dress the bump, bumpstyle, pregnancy fashion, how to prepare child for baby number 2, natural hair, pregnancy fashion, toddler fashion, old navy style, baby number 2, pregnancy, maternity style, mommy bloggerAs my due date approached, my worries started to shift onto myself. Was I capable of showing love for my sons equally? Would my oldest son feel like he was being replaced? What if the baby felt neglected due to me overcompensating with his big brother? Mom guilt was REAL! I now realize that while I love both of my boys, I don’t love them in the same way and that’s perfectly fine!

Naturally, we worried whether our older son would be receptive to his new baby brother.

If you have siblings, do your parents tell you they love you all the same? Hate to break it to you but it’s not possible. The truth is you cannot love your children exactly the same. I’m 1 of 5 children so I’m speaking from experience here! I also asked my dad so that helps a ton too..lol!motherhood, bossmom, bossmomnation, munamommy, parenting magazine, healthyhairtotoe, targetbaby, cat and jack, dress the bump, bumpstyle, pregnancy fashion, how to prepare child for baby number 2, natural hair, pregnancy fashion, toddler fashion, old navy style, baby number 2, pregnancy, maternity style, mommy bloggerWhether you have 2, 3 or 10, all of your children will have different personalities. They’ll have different likes, dislikes, wants, needs, etc; across the board! You’ll connect with each child differently but the love will still be there. Imagine my shock when I realized baby number 2 loves sweets & veggies unlike his big brother…I almost fell out of my chair!..lol.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Favoritism is a real thing. Long-term favoritism can have damaging effects into your LO’s adult years. We as parents need to be mindful of how much attention and affection we’re giving our kids daily.

One of the most important things you can do for your children is love them the way they need you to rather than how you think you should love them.

motherhood, bossmom, bossmomnation, munamommy, parenting magazine, healthyhairtotoe, targetbaby, cat and jack, dress the bump, bumpstyle, pregnancy fashion, how to prepare child for baby number 2, natural hair, pregnancy fashion, toddler fashion, old navy style, baby number 2, pregnancy, maternity style, mommy bloggerIt all boils down to 2 things. What part of us & how much of us each child will require at any given moment are key. For example, my older son likes to cuddle and watch movies together. My younger son would rather me in the room but space to do his own thing (yes, even at 10 months..lol). I’m sure certain aspects of their personalities & interests may change as they get older. We’ll be sure to encourage those interests & passions to help them thrive. Bottom line, they’ll always know they are loved for who they are as individuals.

Are you expecting baby number 2 or thinking about adding to your tribe? You may want to keep this in mind. Don’t beat yourself up and do the best you can to see your children as individuals. One of the most important things you can do for your children is love them the way they need you to rather than how you think you should love them. motherhood, bossmom, bossmomnation, munamommy, parenting magazine, healthyhairtotoe, targetbaby, cat and jack, dress the bump, bumpstyle, pregnancy fashion, how to prepare child for baby number 2, natural hair, pregnancy fashion, toddler fashion, old navy style, baby number 2, pregnancy, maternity style, mommy blogger

4 Simple Ways To Detox Your Home

detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy living

It’s March so let the spring cleaning commence! Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. The leaves come back and fill our trees with luscious green leaves. Birds make their way back to our window sills (and cars..lol) and the air has a crisp yet dewy feel. Many of us look at spring as a time to detox and de-clutter from the winter. When it comes to home, you don’t have to go overboard. Small changes can easily make for a non toxic, healthy and clean sanctuary. Here are 4 simple ways to detox your living space.

Clear Your Closet..Again

I know, we did this for the New Year..lol. This time go through every closet in your home. Clear out anything that has not been worn or used in the last year. detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy living I usually go by season. To make it simple, winter items that I didn’t wear this winter or the previous one MUST go. I use that rule of thumb with all clothing, footwear, linens and even accessories. It’s a great way to make room for new inventory while giving you an idea of what you actually need to buy or replace. Feel free to look at your makeup and hair products and do the same!

Take Off Your Shoes

Mom wasn’t saying this just for her health! Our shoes carry so many germs on a daily basis. 41Lp1TACClLThey can trek in nasty stuff like road sealant, pesticides, saliva and lead dust along with a million other things that can cause illness. Make it a rule for yourself and guests to take shoes off before entering your home.

Crack The Windows

Did you know indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air? detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy livingTry opening your windows to let fresh air circulate as long as the weather permits. This is a great way to flush toxins out when you and family members are sick as well.

Clean Green

The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals, many of which we are unable to see, smell or taste. In small doses, exposure to these chemicals may not be harmful. However, longtime exposure to these toxins will lead to health problems.detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy livingAvoid cleaners with triclosan. It’s been linked to liver and inhalation toxicity and even low levels of triclosan may disrupt thyroid function. Triclosan and other antibacterial ingredients may also increase bacterial resistance to antibiotics.  Try opting for simple natural ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. You can also make your own DIY household cleaner using baking soda, washing soda, distilled white vinegar, Dr. Bronner’s peppermint oil soap and tea tree oil. If you’re not into the DIY method, here a few household cleaning brands that are triclosan free and void of other harmful chemicals and dyes:

  • Seventh Generation
  • Babyganics
  • Green Works
  • Method
  • J.R Watkins
  • Mrs. Meyers
  • The Honest Company

Seems easy right? There are a million other ways you can detox your home and live a less toxic lifestyle. These basic steps can help you get started in doing so without becoming overwhelmed. Just be sure to balance your home with an abundance of love, compassion, selflessness and forgiveness. Ridding your home of emotional toxicity is just as essential for a healthy home.

Stay tuned for more detox tips this month!

3 Essential Self Care Tips for Moms

self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health

Baby is crying, sink is full of dishes, you still haven’t eaten and you don’t remember if you’ve brushed your teeth or not? Sound like you? Now that I’m a mom of two little ones my days are much more hectic. Nursing one baby while prepping dinner for the other has given me a run for my money! I’ve been making more of an effort to practice self care in order to stay centered amid the chaos and joys of motherhood. Here are 3 self care tips that every mom should practice daily.

Relax, We’re Not Perfect.

I remember wanting to keep everything clean and organized once my oldest son arrived. Reality set in real fast as it became harder to keep up with everything. I would get frustrated and overwhelmed very quickly. I’m definitely guilty of distracting my oldest son with television in an effort to get stuff done (pre baby#2). I wanted to be “the perfect mom”.

self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health
Don’t compare yourself to moms on social media either. It’s ego suicide..lol.

I eventually learned to cut myself some slack because I’m not perfect. It’s my job as their mom to teach my kids to love themselves because of their imperfections. Try spending time with your kids. Relax and be present with your baby(ies). They’re only this young for so long.

Exercise.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram you know that I’ve re-committed myself to regular exercise (aside from daily yoga). I know the last thing on mama’s mind is fitness while trying to juggle life. I’m here to tell you that you NEED to make it a priority.

Working out is an awesome stress reliever and energy booster. It’s also helpful in kick starting your weight loss/management goals! Exercise before your family gets their day started. You can also try working out after everyone has gone to sleep. Either way you’ll have your “me time” uninterrupted which is essential for effective self care. Nursing mamas: Be mindful of when your baby cluster feeds. Time your workout session to be done after you’ve fed your L.O for the last time & put them back to sleep. You’ll at least have 2-3 hours before they may wake again to be fed. It’s the perfect time to squeeze in a workout, shower and maybe even a few z’s!

Spend Time Alone.

Spending time alone is a great way to refocus and recharge your brain. It’s also a rare commodity as a parent regardless of how many kids join your crew. I’m not ashamed to admit that I spend time alone the following ways: in my car while in the parking lot of the grocery store & the bathroom (not an easy task).self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health I know I’m not the only one..lol. Wherever or however you do it is fine. Just make sure you’re getting that time to yourself to rejuvenate.

Final Thoughts

The beauty of self care is that it doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. Self care is literally taking the time and making the effort to tend to yourself. As moms, we want to take care of everyone around us.self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health What happens when we pour everything out of our cups? We can’t possibly pour into another cup without refilling our own. Be sure to check in with yourself and your needs. It’s not selfish. It’s actually the most selfless thing you can do for yourself and your family.

Be Well & Take Care,
