4 Simple Ways To Detox Your Home

detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy living

It’s March so let the spring cleaning commence! Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth. The leaves come back and fill our trees with luscious green leaves. Birds make their way back to our window sills (and cars..lol) and the air has a crisp yet dewy feel. Many of us look at spring as a time to detox and de-clutter from the winter. When it comes to home, you don’t have to go overboard. Small changes can easily make for a non toxic, healthy and clean sanctuary. Here are 4 simple ways to detox your living space.

Clear Your Closet..Again

I know, we did this for the New Year..lol. This time go through every closet in your home. Clear out anything that has not been worn or used in the last year. detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy living I usually go by season. To make it simple, winter items that I didn’t wear this winter or the previous one MUST go. I use that rule of thumb with all clothing, footwear, linens and even accessories. It’s a great way to make room for new inventory while giving you an idea of what you actually need to buy or replace. Feel free to look at your makeup and hair products and do the same!

Take Off Your Shoes

Mom wasn’t saying this just for her health! Our shoes carry so many germs on a daily basis. 41Lp1TACClLThey can trek in nasty stuff like road sealant, pesticides, saliva and lead dust along with a million other things that can cause illness. Make it a rule for yourself and guests to take shoes off before entering your home.

Crack The Windows

Did you know indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air? detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy livingTry opening your windows to let fresh air circulate as long as the weather permits. This is a great way to flush toxins out when you and family members are sick as well.

Clean Green

The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals, many of which we are unable to see, smell or taste. In small doses, exposure to these chemicals may not be harmful. However, longtime exposure to these toxins will lead to health problems.detox your home, detox living space, non toxic household cleaners, non toxic soaps, green cleaning, spring cleaning, organic, natural, detox, vegan, healthy home, health, wellness, blogger, healthy livingAvoid cleaners with triclosan. It’s been linked to liver and inhalation toxicity and even low levels of triclosan may disrupt thyroid function. Triclosan and other antibacterial ingredients may also increase bacterial resistance to antibiotics.  Try opting for simple natural ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. You can also make your own DIY household cleaner using baking soda, washing soda, distilled white vinegar, Dr. Bronner’s peppermint oil soap and tea tree oil. If you’re not into the DIY method, here a few household cleaning brands that are triclosan free and void of other harmful chemicals and dyes:

  • Seventh Generation
  • Babyganics
  • Green Works
  • Method
  • J.R Watkins
  • Mrs. Meyers
  • The Honest Company

Seems easy right? There are a million other ways you can detox your home and live a less toxic lifestyle. These basic steps can help you get started in doing so without becoming overwhelmed. Just be sure to balance your home with an abundance of love, compassion, selflessness and forgiveness. Ridding your home of emotional toxicity is just as essential for a healthy home.

Stay tuned for more detox tips this month!

3 Essential Self Care Tips for Moms

self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health

Baby is crying, sink is full of dishes, you still haven’t eaten and you don’t remember if you’ve brushed your teeth or not? Sound like you? Now that I’m a mom of two little ones my days are much more hectic. Nursing one baby while prepping dinner for the other has given me a run for my money! I’ve been making more of an effort to practice self care in order to stay centered amid the chaos and joys of motherhood. Here are 3 self care tips that every mom should practice daily.

Relax, We’re Not Perfect.

I remember wanting to keep everything clean and organized once my oldest son arrived. Reality set in real fast as it became harder to keep up with everything. I would get frustrated and overwhelmed very quickly. I’m definitely guilty of distracting my oldest son with television in an effort to get stuff done (pre baby#2). I wanted to be “the perfect mom”.

self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health
Don’t compare yourself to moms on social media either. It’s ego suicide..lol.

I eventually learned to cut myself some slack because I’m not perfect. It’s my job as their mom to teach my kids to love themselves because of their imperfections. Try spending time with your kids. Relax and be present with your baby(ies). They’re only this young for so long.

Exercise.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram you know that I’ve re-committed myself to regular exercise (aside from daily yoga). I know the last thing on mama’s mind is fitness while trying to juggle life. I’m here to tell you that you NEED to make it a priority.

Working out is an awesome stress reliever and energy booster. It’s also helpful in kick starting your weight loss/management goals! Exercise before your family gets their day started. You can also try working out after everyone has gone to sleep. Either way you’ll have your “me time” uninterrupted which is essential for effective self care. Nursing mamas: Be mindful of when your baby cluster feeds. Time your workout session to be done after you’ve fed your L.O for the last time & put them back to sleep. You’ll at least have 2-3 hours before they may wake again to be fed. It’s the perfect time to squeeze in a workout, shower and maybe even a few z’s!

Spend Time Alone.

Spending time alone is a great way to refocus and recharge your brain. It’s also a rare commodity as a parent regardless of how many kids join your crew. I’m not ashamed to admit that I spend time alone the following ways: in my car while in the parking lot of the grocery store & the bathroom (not an easy task).self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health I know I’m not the only one..lol. Wherever or however you do it is fine. Just make sure you’re getting that time to yourself to rejuvenate.

Final Thoughts

The beauty of self care is that it doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. Self care is literally taking the time and making the effort to tend to yourself. As moms, we want to take care of everyone around us.self care, self care tips, self care moms, mindfulness, health, wellness, mental health, postpartum health What happens when we pour everything out of our cups? We can’t possibly pour into another cup without refilling our own. Be sure to check in with yourself and your needs. It’s not selfish. It’s actually the most selfless thing you can do for yourself and your family.

Be Well & Take Care,

How To Teach Your Children Mindfulness

mindfulness, self care, teach kids mindfulness, kids yoga, yoga, mommy and me yoga, health, wellness, blogger, mommy blogger, healthy hair to toe, family mindfulness

We’re a little over 2 weeks into 2017. How are those New Year’s resolutions coming along? Many people are promising to be more mindful this year. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and connecting to one’s emotions without judgement. The benefits of actively practicing mindfulness include:

  • reduced stress & anxiety levels.
  • improved focus.
  • better sleeping habits.
  • manage stress.
  • increased ability to regulate emotions (Lord knows kids & teens need this just as much as us!..lol.)
  • develop a positive outlook.

In today’s society of instant gratification through technology and social media, mindfulness is as essential to kids as healthy eating and education. My husband and I have committed to being more mindful and teaching our children to do the same. Here are 3 mindfulness activities you can teach your children to set a foundation for them to thrive academically and in all aspects of life.

Take a Brain Break

I can vividly remember my kindergarten teacher taking us outside to learn about the types of clouds.  After our lesson she had us lay on our blankets and look at the sky and tell her what images we saw in the clouds. I didn’t realize then but my teacher was incorporating a mindfulness activity into our science lesson. She was giving us a “brain break”. mindfulness, self care, teach kids mindfulness, kids yoga, yoga, mommy and me yoga, health, wellness, blogger, mommy blogger, healthy hair to toe, brain breakThis brain break was allowing us to decompress and quiet our minds. It’s an effective tool in helping children (and adults) to process what we just learned. Brain break activities can be done during homework time, stressful situations or while transitioning from one activity to the next. Side note: To this day I can name each type of cloud (cirrus, cumulus, stratus) and vividly describe each of them.

Take a Listening Walk

Leave the cellphones (o.k, take 1 with you but leave it in your pocket) & head outside for a listening walk! Much like a nature walk, listening walks teach kids to rely on their senses and take in their surroundings. I love doing listening walks with my preschooler. He loves pointing out the animals he sees and hears or random street signs and cars. Most of the time I don’t even need to prompt him!mindfulness, self care, teach kids mindfulness, kids yoga, yoga, mommy and me yoga, health, wellness, blogger, mommy blogger, healthy hair to toe Try asking your kids about the sounds they hear and what the sounds remind them of such as happy memories or experiences. They’ll have less room for negative thoughts and more room for the memories you are creating together.

Mindful Eating

In today’s age we are so used to being on the go with everything. We rarely take the time to enjoy our lunch, let alone life..lol. We tend to rush eating in order to move on to the next thing off our to do list. Mindful tasting stresses the importance of being present and in the moment while eating. It encourages us to enjoy every morsel of food on our plate.mindfulness, self care, teach kids mindfulness, kids yoga, yoga, mommy and me yoga, health, wellness, blogger, mommy blogger, healthy hair to toe Ask your kids to describe how their food tastes. Get specific on textures, colors and shapes. You can ask older kids about the different seasonings they may taste. Try encouraging your kids (all ages) to describe a happy memory or experience they associate their meal or dessert. Research has shown that watching television while eating causes us to eat more rather than being present in the moment and enjoying our meal. Our brains miss that signal that we’re satisfied because we’re too distracted.

Final Thoughts

As parents, the best thing we can do is lead by example. We can practice all of the activities mentioned and experience the same benefits of mindfulness as well. Try encouraging your children to practice mindfulness a few minutes each day in order to get a routine going. Children crave consistency, especially in their younger years. Practicing just one of these activities daily can have a positive impact on your kids and entire family. mindfulness, self care, teach kids mindfulness, kids yoga, yoga, mommy and me yoga, health, wellness, blogger, mommy blogger, healthy hair to toe, family mindfulnessThrough mindfulness, our children are learning that the key to experiencing life to its fullest potential is living in the moment. Do you and your children practice mindfulness? Have you noticed any benefits since practicing daily?

As per the DICK’S Sporting Goods Sports Matter website, the following paragraph explains the campaign:

“Billions of dollars in funding have been cut from youth sports programs in recent years, leaving millions of students unable to play. The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation created the Sports Matter program because we believe that sports make people better. Sports build character, increase confidence, and motivate kids to stay in school and aim for higher education. Since 2014, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation has pledged over $50 million to give children the opportunity to play. Through these efforts, the Sports Matter initiative has raised awareness of the importance of youth sports and saved over 1,800 teams.”

By purchasing a pair of  Sports Matter green shoe laces, $2 of your purchase will be donated to the DICK’s Foundation to support young athletes across the country. These laces are priced at $2.99 so that makes it very easy to donate at check out. How awesome is that?
