Hey guys! Are you one of those people who eats breakfast and then you’re hungry an hour later? Maybe you end up binging on snacks and sweets at the office to hold you over until lunch? Or do you live with a digestive issue or two that leaves you in pain or bloated at the most inconvenient times? Hangry

Lashing out, being short on patience or straight up turning into Cruella deVille on your co-workers or family when hungry? You need this breakfast smoothie in your life! To combat hunger pains, I added 1 teaspoon of flaxseed meal and 2 teaspoons of chia seeds. Both are PACKED with fiber, iron, omega 3-s  and help with digestive issues. Flaxseed also promotes the following:

  • Natural detoxification,
  • Weight & fat loss by reducing sugar cravings.
  • Reduce skin dryness and flakiness while improving symptoms of acne, rosacea, and eczema.
  • Anti-inflammatory (FYI: inflamed bodies hold onto excess weight),
  • Reduce gut inflammation (great for Crohn’s patients)
  • Reduce cholesterol levels
  • Promotes healthy hair & nails.

Make sure your frozen banana is soft enough to be blended without harming your blender’s blade. Blend all ingredients for about 90 seconds to 2 minutes and serve immediately. If you prefer “frothy” aka thicker smoothies just add more rolled oats.

Topping recommendations: Sprouted Granola, cacao nibs, chia seeds, fruit of choice  but I recommend banana with a dash of cinnamon. I topped mine with One Degree Organics Cacao Sprouted Granola

I drank this smoothie around 8:00 am and was not hungry until 12:30pm to give you an idea of how well this baby fights hunger.

Just keep in mind that dates are VERY HIGH in sugar content (approx 65g of sugar per 100 gram serving). Although it’s natural sugar, it is still sugar and should be consumed in moderation. Chia seeds were added for a boost of omega-3’s and fiber, brain food!

Wanderlust 108 Yoga Festival Recap: Brooklyn, NY

Yogis, yoga enthusiasts and pretty much anyone passionate about health and wellness gathered on the lawn in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park yesterday for Wanderlust 108 Yoga Festival. My best friend & godmother of my sons. She’s literally down for ANYTHING I want to go to!

The day started with a mindful triathlon which included a 5K run and cool down with yoga & meditation. I didn’t participate in the 5K First but I did join my fellow wanderlusters in a historic attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most people doing yoga in pairs. Everyone who participated in attempting to break the world record received a red Adidas t-shirt to wear during the yoga session. As you can see above, the lawn was a sea of red..lol. It’s NYC so of course we rocked it and broke the record! Next, I hopped on my mat for THE BEST 90 minute DJ powered yoga flow I’ve ever experienced! The lawn was FILLED with over 300 people doing yoga and it was a flow to remember!

The crisp breeze and blue sky really helped set the tone along with the music by DJ Drez. There were yogi’s from beginner to advanced on the lawn so I didn’t feel intimidated at all. This session really worked my core, thighs, arms and more. I have that “hurt so good” feeling this morning which I low-key love!..lol. This flow called for relying on our partner and fellow wanderlusters for support in every aspect. I walked away from this session feeling calm, centered, grateful and with a sense of clarity.

I meditated for about 15 minutes and then my best friend and I decided to walk the lawn and scope out the booths and tents. I also purchased “The Heart of the Revolution” by Noah Levine. This book focuses on the Buddha’s radical teachings on forgiveness, compassion and kindness. I can’t wait to start reading this week!

We tried samples from our favorite plant-based brands like Health-Ade Kombucha, Rebbl and Kite Hill. One new vendor we tried as plant-based snack company “Nothing But The Fruit”. They make the most delicious healthy fruit bites and provided LOADS of free samples. Check out the super cute booth they had set up! I ended up loving the Rasberry Chia Fruit Bites the most. Just think fruit roll-up without all the junk and preservatives!.lol.

I signed up for Wanderlust super last-minute so I wasn’t able to sign up for many of the workshops. There are two options for tickets: 1) Free ticket: Bandana + Yoga & Meditation only. 2) $55 ticket: allows you to participate in the 5K run, access to unlimited workshops, goodie bag, bandana and guarantees you a mat on the lawn by the stage for yoga & meditation.

The 411 on Adaptogens and How To Use Them

Happy Monday y’all! I’ve been posting a few smoothie recipes with adaptogens and you guys have been asking a TON of questions about them. Adaptogens are a nontoxic substance that helps the body adapt to physical & emotional stress, minimize it’s damaging effects while keeping our bodies in working order. They focus on helping the body as a whole rather than one specific function. They earned their name by growing in extreme conditions and evolving to adapt to their environment. By doing so they were able to survive and thrive in otherwise harsh conditions. If they can do that for themselves just imagine what they can do for our bodies!

Over many years, adaptogens have been proven to reduce stress and inflammation, boost immunity, stabilize moods, improve mental clarity, combat signs of aging, increase endurance, improve sleep and so much more!

When our bodies are stressed we are prone to:

  • exercise less often
  • emotionally eat (usually the wrong foods too)
  • digestive issues (bloating, stomach upset, diarheaa
  • have sleep issues
  • emotional outbursts

Do any of these sound familiar? I can count at least 3 that affect me if I take on too many tasks or don’t make enough time for self care. If I go even 1 -2 weeks without exercise or meditation I feel it! I’m moody, lethargic, hell…even bloated! Adaptogens help your body physically respond in a healthy way to life’s daily stressors while ensuring it doesn’t miss a beat.  Our bodies and brains are then able to thrive at their fullest potential, leaving less room for ailments and other problems to arise. When we are thriving we feel good, look good and are way more motivated!

Anyone who has an autoimmune condition, digestive problems, inflammatory/chronic pain conditions, migraines, vascular conditions, history of cancer, diabetics, fatigue, mood disorders, adrenal issues..the list goes on! Mamas, certain adaptogens are safe to take while breastfeeding while others aren’t. Always double check before ingesting anything!

How To Incorporate Adaptogens Into Your Diet

Most adaptogens come in powder form but there are a few available in pill form. You can add adptogens to your salads, teas, coffee, smoothies, soup, oatmeal, water, juice and much more! How you take them is really up to you. I take reishi and chlorella daily in powder form. I add chlorella to my smoothies only. It has a very dark green color so I don’t recommend adding to tea..lol. Adaptogens are great for helping your body resist the damaging affects of stress BUT you still need to be proactive in how you respond on a conscious level! There a a million ways you can keep yourself centered and in a positive space such as:

Regular physical activity.
Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, tai chi or getting a massage.
Keeping a sense of humor about things.
Socializing with family and friends.
Setting aside time for hobbies, such as reading a book, listening to music or doing whatever makes you happy!

At the time, I was at a crossroad with my passion, job and dream career (hopefully that makes sense..lol). I participated in highly engaging and unique group activities that allowed me to gain a better understanding of myself and the direction I wanted to go with my wellness career. So many of us were networking and swapping business ideas which was so refreshing!

Y’all, the swag bags that you receive from the W.E.L.L. Summit are GAME CHANGERS! Just make sure you get there early because they run out pretty quick.
