Pregnancy Proofing Your Beauty Regimen

6-pregnancy-safe-beauty-products9

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey but between our diets, doctors appointments, prepping the home, who can keep up? One thing we tend to overlook are our beauty products. Many of the beauty products we use may have unsafe ingredients that have a susceptibility to leak into our bloodstream and enter the placenta of our growing babies. Here are 6 pregnancy safe beauty products to consider using while pregnant.

Facial Cleansers

Pre-pregnancy your skin was flawless. All of a sudden, you’re able to play connect the dots on your face. Sound like you? Yea, me too! Raging hormones, prenatal vitamins and a whole host of other factors pay a role into acne during pregnancy.

I love my DIY acne/problem skin regimen (<–click the link for more info) but sometimes I’m not in the mood for it..lol. If you feel the same way at times, two cleansers I recommend are Pacifica Kale Detox Deep Cleaning Face Wash & Acure Brightening Facial Scrubpregnancy safe, skincare, acure scrub, pregnancy, maternity, beauty, health, holistic beauty, holistic, shea moisture, alba botanical, dr. bronner's soap, natural, organic, fair trade, vegan, natural skincare, pacificapregnancy safe, skincare, acure scrub, pregnancy, maternity, beauty, health, holistic beauty, holistic, shea moisture, alba botanical, dr. bronner's soap, natural, organic, fair trade, vegan, natural skincare, pacifica

Both products are vegan, cruelty free & use certified organic fair trade ingredients all while helping you to maintain a healthy glow. I love how both keep my combination/oily skin balanced and smooth. I must add that both products are also very effective at removing makeup! I usually use the Acure Brightening Facial Scrub first then cleanse with the Pacifica Kale Detox Deep Cleaning Face Wash. I then follow-up with a lightweight moisturizer like argan oil. Healthy skin while using pregnancy safe products is always a win win for both mom and baby!

Soaps & Body Washes

When it comes to body washes & soaps, I absolutely LOVE Dr. Bronner’s Hemp Peppermint Pure Castile Soap! pregnancy safe, skincare, acure scrub, pregnancy, maternity, beauty, health, holistic beauty, holistic, shea moisture, alba botanical, dr. bronner's soap, natural, organic, fair trade, vegan, natural skincare, pacificaMy entire family (parents, siblings, husband, son, etc) use it! It’s my go-to for removing makeup and daily cleansing. I’ve also used this soap to clean & disinfect household items like dishes and even our shower/tub! You can even use this soap as a detergent for clothes or a deep cleansing shampoo! Dr. Bronner’s products contain all certified organic & fair-trade ingredients such as coconut, jojoba, hemp and olive oils. They’re also cruelty free which means no animal testing a performed while making their products. Dr. Bronner’s soaps are completely pregnancy safe and come in a variety of scents and formulas. They even have a formula for babies! I also love the fact they have travel size amounts making it very convenient for me to pack in my hospital bag for delivery.

Another product I absolutely love is Shea Moisture’s Olive & Green Tea Bubble Bath & Body Wash.pregnancy safe, skincare, acure scrub, pregnancy, maternity, beauty, health, holistic beauty, holistic, shea moisture, alba botanical, dr. bronner's soap, natural, organic, fair trade, vegan, natural skincare, pacifica

Some of the ingredients in this moisturizing body wash include avocado oil, honeysuckle, shea and olive oils. I bought this wash back in August and we still have about half left. Both my son and husband use it as well. We use it as a bubble bath for our son and he loves it! This wash smells amazing and leaves our skin feeling very clean and supple without an overpowering scent. The last thing you want is a body wash that doesn’t leave you feeling clean and & makes you feel like you threw on perfume in the shower. Tip: This Shea Moisture body wash is a little thick so be careful when applying not to use too much. If you use too much it will take a while to rinse off.

Moisturizers

Dry itchy skin during pregnancy can be a real pain. I definitely experienced more dry skin during my 1st pregnancy than this one. I’ve always been a fan using of sweet almond oil but I needed something a bit stronger. This time around I found relief with two pregnancy safe body lotions. Alba Botanica Very Emollient Body Lotion for severely dry skin & Shea Moisture Argan Oil & Raw Shea Body Lotion .pregnancy safe, skincare, acure scrub, pregnancy, maternity, beauty, health, holistic beauty, holistic, shea moisture, alba botanical, dr. bronner's soap, natural, organic, fair trade, vegan, natural skincare, pacificaAlba’s body lotion is formulated with 100% vegetarian ingredients like avocado oil, grape seed oil, cucumber, shea butter and aloe. These ingredients make this lotion extremely moisturizing and non-pore clogging as well. If you have sensitive dry skin like myself then this is a body lotion to put on your list to try.

pregnancy safe, skincare, acure scrub, pregnancy, maternity, beauty, health, holistic beauty, holistic, shea moisture, alba botanical, dr. bronner's soap, natural, organic, fair trade, vegan, natural skincare, pacificaShea Moisture’s Argan Oil & Raw Shea Body Lotion is formulated with natural and certified organic ingredients such as:
Shea Butter which deeply moisturizes and repairs skin with vitamins and essential fatty acids.
Argan Oil: naturally high in Vitamin E, keeps skin soft and smooth.
Frankincense & Myrrh Extract: natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial which aids in healing dry cracked skin.

Shea Moisture’s lotion worked extremely well during the winter months of my pregnancy. I live in New York and the winters are pretty brutal here just to give you an idea.  Tip: I usually exfoliate and moisturize with either product on wet skin to maximize hydration.

Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

yoga, prenatal yoga, prenatal, pregnancy, pilates, fitness, child birth, motherhood, target, adidas, bohemian, bohemian island, health, vegan, veganism, wellness, natural hair, style, fashion, beauty.

There is no question that a healthy mind and body are they key to a healthy and happy pregnancy. High impact workouts are not really recommended for expectant moms so yoga is a great alternative. Prenatal yoga focuses on specific poses for pregnant women that aim to increase strength and flexibility. It’s also an excellent way to keep your nerves at bay to physically, emotionally and mentally prepare for a positive pregnancy & childbirth experience. Below are some of the amazing benefits of prenatal yoga.

1. Increases strength, stamina and balance:

Pregnant or not, yoga can help to increase your strength and  balance all over. Prenatal yoga will give you the strength you need in your lower body to carry the added pregnancy weight from your growing baby. You’ll also gain an increased strength in your upper body to handle the weight you’ll be carrying around for a year or so after giving birth.

2. Prenatal yoga helps relieve aches and pains:

Pregnancy can literally be a pain in the butt!..lol. Back pain is the most common pregnancy complaint that often worsens as the weight of the uterus and baby increases. Prenatal yoga helps to strengthen the muscles that support this new weight while taking pressure off the lower back and sacrum muscle. Another common pregnancy complaint is sciatic nerve pain. Sciatic nerve pain radiates down the legs & sometimes right into the tips of your toes. Many women experience significant relief from this intense pain through prenatal yoga. I’ve dealt with sciatic nerve pain in and off for years but big time in my 1st and 2nd trimesters. My favorite poses are the pigeon pose and half-moon pose. Both poses can stretch the lower back muscles to relieve pain while inversions can help make space in the pelvis to lessen painful muscle irritation.

3. Prenatal yoga teaches you to breathe:

Breathing exercises can be incredibly helpful during both pregnancy and labor for calming and centering purposes. They also help to maximize oxygen flow when you need it (i.e. labor pains!). The ability to control your breath is an absolute necessity for pain management during labor and childbirth. Those of you seeking an all natural route for labor and delivery should definitely seek out prenatal yoga.

4. Prenatal yoga helps you open your hips for childbirth:

As your pregnancy progresses, your prenatal yoga practice should be tailored to focus more directly on childbirth preparation. Hip opening poses such as squats and bound angle can help your baby get into position and help with pushing. Seek out prenatal yoga instructors that have experience in working with women at the end of the last trimester. They will be able to assist a great deal by giving you to the tools to cope with labor pain and ease into childbirth.

5. Connect with other moms, boost confidence & decrease anxiety.

Prenatal yoga will help you to meet and connect with other moms (veteran yogis and beginners) who will give you tips and guidance on yoga but also what’s to come in your motherhood journey. Some may even have the same anxieties you’re feeling which will put you at ease! You’ll gain an increased confidence and a decreased feeling of anxiety to help you through it all! You will also have an easier time snapping back into your pre-pregnancy shape afterwards. More importantly, prenatal yoga can give you a heightened ability to connect with your pregnancy and bond with your baby by focusing on being in the moment.

I am so glad I decided to take up prenatal yoga this pregnancy! Have you ever tried yoga or prenatal as part of your workout/healthy living regimen? Check out some more tips on the benefits of yoga here!
